Ice Is NOT Nice

Preview Part 1 >>

Whether flying in the winter or the summer, understanding the factors of structural icing is critical when flying IFR.  This training CD is one that is not to be missed for any instrument rated pilot.

Chesapeake Aviation Training is proud to be teamed with Ben C. Bernstein of Leading Edge Atmospherics to produce this comprehensive training CD-ROM.  Learn all aspects of structural icing from Ben Bernstein, a nationally-known icing forecaster, and Scott Dennstaedt, an FAA certified instrument flight instructor and contributing editor for IFR magazine.

Ben was the leading researcher and developer of the Current Icing Product (CIP) now available on the Aviation Weather Center's Aviation Digital Data Service (ADDS).  Ben will help you understand how clouds form and become a serious icing threat to pilots.   More information on the contents of this CD will be released shortly...for now, enjoy Scott's interview with Ben.

This CD will be delivered in two parts.  Part 1 of this training CD will consist of 9 modules with over 100 slides (2 hours and 36 minutes long) and will be narrated by Scott Dennstaedt and Ben Bernstein.  Part 1 will describe the underlying factors associated with structural icing.  It will also consist of a discussion of the various weather products or tools that can be used when preparing for a flight when icing might be a hazard.  Included will be a short icing scenario.

Ice Is NOT Nice Part 2 consists of three detailed flight planning scenarios where icing was a flight risk. This program on CD-ROM delivers nearly two hours (112 minutes) of scenario-based training on structural icing. Developed and narrated by Scott C. Dennstaedt and meteorologist & icing expert Ben C. Bernstein you'll discover how the experts identify the risk of icing using actual weather data captured during the potential icing event.

After collecting and archiving data for well over a dozen potential icing cases, three post-cold front scenarios were chosen and include...

1. Springfield, IL to Williamsport, PA on November 6, 2007
2. Austin, TX to Abilene, TX on March 3, 2008
3. Astoria, OR to Eugene, OR on March 11, 2008

Note: Icing is a very complex topic and requires a challenging dialog. We strongly encourage you to review the Ice Is NOT Nice, Part 1 CD before viewing Part 2. If you have not purchased a copy of Ice Is NOT Nice, Part 1, you may find the material in Ice Is NOT Nice, Part 2 difficult to follow since Part 2 assumes the reader has a basic knowledge of the various concepts and icing products taught in Ice Is NOT Nice Part 1. Additionally, many of the links to the online weather products used in Part 2 are documented in Ice Is NOT Nice Part 1.
